Should you fake your confidence?

Should you fake it before you make it?

Mary Jacksh wrote the danger of faking it in her article, “Why Faking It Can be Soul-destroying“. Some people agreed and some are not. It’s an interesting discussion and I would like to share more about my opinion here.

How often have you heard the quote “faking it before you make it”? In some degree the quote reflects some concepts in growth. But it is not always effective if it stays alone. Let me share with you more on what you can and cannot fake.

The danger of faking your confidence

Mary shared about the danger of faking your confidence. One of them is on affirmation. You may have told your overweight self in the mirror “slim and beautiful.” Or that person in the mirror who was struggling to make ends meet “a millionaire”. As Mary put it, those are the times “we are trying to brainwash ourselves.

Yet, someone is not seen in the mirror, one little voice that will not accept that. It keeps on saying, “you are not that slim”, “you are not that rich”, “you are not that great”, and so on. It’s our subconscious mind, one that usually controls us.

It’s one that will not let you delusion yourself. By force, you may have changed what you believe consciously, but things will not change unless you deal with much bigger part that controls you. Your subconscious mind. And affirmation is hardly able to change your subconscious mind.

Have you ever fought your heart?

Nervous… I have no idea why, but that was what I felt last weekend. Maybe it’s worry of the project that I have to complete in The Courage to Create program. Maybe it’s a worry as I was working on the new theme on my blog. Will it show indecisiveness? Or instability? Will anyone unsubscribe? And so on. Maybe it’s a fear of failure, or maybe… it’s also a fear of success.

“When you cease doubting, you have stopped moving forward”
~Paulo Coelho (Brida)

The fact is… it is a part of success journey, a journey towards your dream. It should have happened to you, unless you have stopped following your dream. And it was something that Paulo Coelho also shared in his book, The Alchemist.

One boy, a shepherd, gave up all his sheep to pursue his dream to find his treasure. He found his dream girl in the journey, but he also decided to leave her for a moment to pursue his dream to find the treasure accompanied by the Alchemist.

This is the world of “I”s

“Who am I?”

Do you often ask that question? It’s a very basic question that we should ask ourselves. It speaks about our calling and identity. The answer guides us in what we should do, what the significance of our life is, what our calling is, and so on.

The program I attended recently, The Courage to Create by ECI asked this question in quite an early part of the discussion, the question of “Who am I?

“I am a son of God, through Jesus Christ” It’s in my mind while trying to answer that question. Kelvin Sim (the Master Coach for the program) seems to disagree with such point of view as it more explains the perspective/identity given by environment outside us, such as religion, pastors, and friends.

To answer the question, Kelvin brought us instead to look into our past memories. In that journey, I found the things that made me into who I am today, memories that shaped me, both joyful and hurting moments. He taught us to deal with it instead of ignoring and suppressing it. It’s the way to find who we are.
