To change or not to change
We are all need to grow, we are all need to change, and that is undeniable.
But… how should we grow and what should we change?
The news today is inspired from “Winning with People” by John C. Maxwell, a quote from him…
When it comes to character issues, work on your weaknesses. When it comes to talents, go with your strengths.
John C. Maxwell
Yesterday I watched Oprah Winfrey show, a collection on her show’s 20th anniversary, the first part that I watched is The Beginning, looking at how she struggled in the beginning of her career, from a reporter to news reader, and eventually a talk-show host. She also struggled with her physical outlook, black and big, but eventually she made it through and very successful as she is now.
Despite of all the admiration, I envy her… I envy her for being such a good communicator, good speaker; she is truly good with words. I envy her for being able to touch lives with so much inspiration, to bring the good from the guests in her show and share them to the world. Then I wonder… how is it possible to do the same thing with my talent? With my blog maybe?
Continue on… I watched the subsequent part, the Stars, Act 1, and here is my Aha! moment, when she commented Julia Roberts, she mentioned on the similarity that stars have…
Now that I have interviewed hundred or maybe even thousands of people who have known to the public, there is a common thread in all of them that I really like. That is they come to the business, knowing that it is a business, but knowing that their person-hood, who they are is more important than what they do.
Oprah Winfrey
She continued on commenting Julia Roberts as one of them…
Who she is as a person is bigger than what she does as a movie star.
Oprah Winfrey
The lesson: It’s not a matter of what you are doing; it is a matter of who you are, it is a matter of your character.
Similarly, here is a quote I have ever shared before in becoming a leader…
Management has a lot to do with answers. Leadership is a function of questions. And the first question for a leader always is: ‘Who do we intend to be?’ Not ‘What are we going to do?’ but ‘Who do we intend to be?’
Max De Pree
Evaluate your character and work on your weaknesses on your character. One thing that I believe, as your character grows, your comfort zone expands, and eventually you are able to do much more, more than what you think you can do right now.
Any thoughts about working on your character? I would like to hear your comments.
For your success,
Robert

We often struggle with envy and jealousy, we want to be more than what we are right now, we want to do more than we can do right now.

I loved your article. I don’t get to watch much Oprah, but I do think she is a shining star and we need more of them. Your closing quote is profound. I love it and plan to take it to work to put on the boardroom board.
As for developing character, I think that comes form undeveloping all those things you think are you but are not. As you remove the vias, and the defences and the things you put in place to hide yourself behind, then your true character emerges from the veils, but it takes work.
Reading articles like yours helps in the battle.

Hi Nick, thanks a lot for your comments, I appreciate that very much that you enjoy my article.
Thanks for your insight on the character development as well, that really bless me, one that is very important step, a quote that has inspired me so many times…
The pretense of becoming who we are not will not work, as what you said, we need to remove the defenses we often make for excuses, we need to become who we are, and that is our first step to become better than we are.
Thank you so much for sharing your thought!
I appreciate it very much.
