The five reasons why you’re no ordinary
February 1, 2008
Will you say, “I am just an ordinary person”? Or will you say with me, “I am successful!”?
This article is inspired by an article by Wyatt Song in his blog Ueverse.com, titled “The incomplete statement - “if I can do this, anyone can…”. As what he mentioned, I know many people say that they are just an ordinary person; they are saying “I’m just an ordinary person, if I can do it, anyone can do it.” It sounds humble, but does it right?
Wyatt mentioned in his article a new statement that I like better,
I’m a successful person, if I can do it, anyone who wish to, can also do it
Wyatt Song
That statement only is not enough, Wyatt also continue on that wishing is not enough, there are needs of taking action and making changes. Ask if you need, and persistence and discipline is necessary as well.
Instead of thinking that you’re ordinary, why don’t you start thinking that you’re successful?
Here are the five reasons of why you should start saying that I am successful…
1. Because you’re already successful
In Millionaire Mind Intensive Seminar, T. Harv Eker threw a question to his audience, asking them of who can write down the 5 things that they have been successful with. Amazingly, only less of the audiences raise their hands.
Similarly, many find it difficult to find something that they have done it successfully. When one that appear to be a success comes out in our mind, our little voice will say, “but you didn’t do it correctly”, or “this or that person didn’t like what you do”, or “you failed to persist through it, and you fail eventually”.
Harv Eker then corrected us from that mindset, that sometimes we are too perfectionist with what we will consider as our achievement. We can actually find little things that we do successfully, when you focus on what you have done correctly instead of your mistakes, you will be able to say that you’re successful.
2. Because saying you’re ordinary doesn’t show the necessary effort
As what Wyatt emphasized on his article, saying that you’re ordinary doesn’t show the effort you’re putting in. Being ordinary everyone can do it without any effort, but it’s not the same with being successful. Successful takes more than a wish; it takes action and failure, learning and relearning, changes of mindset, commitment and persistent.
Saying you’re successful will remind you of what it takes to be successful. At the same time, it will remind others that they can do it as well, BUT they’ve got to have the will and the mindset to learn and make actions.
3. Because you have something to teach others
Karen shared her thoughts in my previous insights article “The five myths about finding a mentor”
There are many people in this world that we can learn from and many people who can learn from us.
Be careful when you’re underestimating the talent or the success you have. We all have our unique story, unique life and unique experience, something to teach others with. Below is the quote that inspired me to shine and to continue sharing and writing in this blog, hope this will inspire you to teach others as well…
You’re a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
Marianne Williamson (A Return to Love)
4. Because successful people are generous
What’s in the successful people that make them generous, it’s their belief that life seems abundant. Below is a quote from John C. Maxwell about generosity that I inspired me to be much more generous…
Sometimes we hold on to our possessions because we fear we might run out - life seems scarce. But when we believe that giving is the way to live, we will produce more in the future - life seems abundant.
John C. Maxwell
Similarly, having a mindset of a successful person, you will have the mindset of abundant life, in whatever condition you have today, and in the same time you will be more generous to others. I have discussed an article The Secret of Giving that explains much about this mindset.
5. Because you’re going to be successful
Here is what T. Harv Eker said…
Success breeds success
T. Harv Eker
He pointed out the habit of listing down 5 successes at the end of every day. With that habit, every day will be your opportunity to be successful, to choose the right thing to do, and at the end of the day you will reflect on what you have done or not done successfully.
Why is this necessary? Success will breed another success. Success will boost your confident and your willingness to make a step forward in life. You may say, how about failure? Failure won’t breed success, but the success of learning from your failure does. By having the mindset of always learning, you won’t have difficulty in finding 5 successes or more within a day.
In having a success mindset, you will have a positive mindset, you will be thankful of what achievement you have made so far, while striving for the better and give out your best, it’s the way to be successful in this life.
Your challenge
I have shared enough, if you think you’re life is no ordinary, why don’t you share your life story? Please share your story in the comments.
And here is a contest not to miss out that Derrick Kwa held, share your story and you will have a chance to get a brand new copy of Seth Godin’s book, titled Meatball Sundae.
You’re no ordinary and you have a story to tell, insights to shine with, and let others learn from you!
For your success,
Robert

The five reasons why you’re no ordinary : Reason-4-Smile Weblog…
Many of us think of ourselves as ordinary. We often mentioned about our achievement as "I am ordinary person, anyone can do it as well." It might be coming out of good intention, to humble ourselves. But we need to be aware of this state…
Hi Robert,
Interesting article. I don’t like the word ordinary because I think everyone is really extrodinary! Saying you are ordinary really means, that you haven’t yet seen the light within you, but it’s still there. My Dad use to say he was just one of the ordinary guys, and that use to really tick me off, because in ways he didn’t recognize he was extraordinary.
I agree with you, everyone has a story, or a song to sing. I think the world would be a much better place if more people told their story, or sang their song.
Thanks,
Nick
hi Robert, thank you for visiting my blog.
My husband is really good at this, seeing his successess are true successess rather than just ordinary.
This is something I have to learn to do that’s why I started my Living in Peace blog. I have to be more active in my living. We women are raised to not brag or to no put such importance in the things we do everyday unless it’s something extraordinary. But really, when you think about it, the everday little things we do ARE extraordinary. We just don’t always realize it.
That’s what I”m trying to learn to do…to SEE my successes. I may not have a big time career, I may not be famous or rich, but I am successfull and I have to learn to see that and then to believe it.
I’ve got a ways to go. Old habits are hard to break, you know?
I like this Revolution template too. Nice blog you got here.
Hi Robert,
Thanks for the reference and drawing further discussion on the topic. As far as success goes, I think everyone has their own success in the areas they value the most. Success means different thing to different people, occassionally my confidence gets a knock on the head when i look at so many people who in my eyes have achieved so much, it is only when i focus on myself, my goal my vision, that i realise how much i have achieved comparing with the me in the past.
I think it’s always important for people to discover their own success and their self-worth.
Good post!
@ Nick,
Welcome to my blog! I agree with you that everyone is extraordinary, we all have something to contribute and something we can teach or share to others. A story to tell and a song to sing!
Thanks for sharing the story about your dad as well! Pass him this article =)
@ JMom
Thanks for sharing your story about women as well, it’s great that we can find something meaningful even in daily routine or daily chores!
First step of any changes is awareness, it’s great that now you’re aware of your old habits, take a step to change and grow everyday, great to know you in the blogosphere!
All the best,
Robert
Nice article. (and theme too! …:) )
@ Wyatt,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, again I second your opinion, we can sense that we are successful by looking how far we have changed and grown over the years, not by looking at how far we still need to go!
And comparing to others in never the right way to live our life.
@ Michelle,
Thanks for the comment, we’re now using the same theme =)
This is really a great theme.
Keep up the good work, people need to share the good news more often. We need a balance in life and it is the positive people that manage to get things done and still have time to help others…while others are to afraind of rejection or failure and they do not make the necessary effort so the failure begins with not trying or giving up when it becomes difficult.
Hi Patrick, thanks for sharing your thoughts,
fear of rejection and failure are things that we’re all usually afraid of, we felt as if we have no choice but hiding our talent. It’s something great if you are able to see that you’re way no ordinary and you have many that you can share and teach to others.
Best wishes,
Robert
