Dinner with dreamers

January 5, 2008

20080105_sandwich.jpgWhat happens when the three dreamers having dinner together?

It was a Friday night, in a cafe called Timbre, a cafe with a very nice outdoor setting, nice arrangement, and live band which would be playing later that night. Over there, the three of us, me and two other friends, two girls who are big dreamers, having dinner together.

One of them is Lydia, she’s really an artist, her outlook and dress really show that, she has started a business on design and photography, d’Zign for you! She is also the one whose video I have ever posted before in this blog, the Thank You, Rainbow! Another dreamer is Elvira, someone who has been inspired so much to do business, investing both money, energy and courage to make her dream comes true! Both of them are dreamers, they both have a great dream and vision, and it was really a great dinner with them!

So here was our menu for the dinner:

The Appetizer: Sandwich

Here is what they’re talking about at the time we met up, I’m a bit lost as well at the beginning, doesn’t have any idea what is ’sandwich’. It’s not about sandwich that is edible, but this one is business ’sandwich’. Let me explain to you, it’s a principle of a much better way to give constructive criticism, to ask and persuade another person.

Just as a sandwich, a stack of soft-bread, hard-filling (meat, egg, cheese, vegetables), and another soft-bread; to criticize or influence people better, we need to wrap the hard part, the intention with the soft speech as well. Wrap criticism with the comment and compliment, to be able to get into the heart and change that person, that’s the constructive criticism they’re talking about.

Yes, that was our appetizer, practicing ’sandwich’, that’s our agreement for the whole dinner, whenever we want to say that another is wrong, we’ll put it into sandwich, soft-hard-soft. It was fun, and that really makes the dinner full of laughter.

The Main Course: Dream

Yes, on the dinner, we also talked about our dream, Lydia with a dream of becoming a film-maker, Elvira with a dream of becoming a presenter, just like Oprah, and me with the dream of becoming a writer!

It didn’t stop with that, all of us do take action on moving towards our dream, Lydia is taking a film-making course, Elvira is taking a radio DJ course, and I’m taking the Blog Mastermind course from Yaro Starak.

For the main course, we talked about our dreams, we shared info and options to pursue our dream. It’s really much of inspiration that we got from each other during the dinner.

We don’t really gather or having meal together that often, and it’s really surprising that we both have such a commonality. Our characters are different, while I’m an introvert, Lydia is a very outspoken and hilarious women, a person who can make anyone around her laugh so much! Our passions and interest are also different! Yet we all dreamers, not only small, but big dreamers, dreamers as we will live forever.

The Dessert: Music

Around 10.30 pm, the live band was started. For me, that might be the second or third time I was in the cafe or restaurant with a live band. I’ve never been interested in live band or music, for me it’s kind of waste of money and time. With that loud music, we can’t really chat much, we can’t share insights to each other. I preferred reading or listening to inspirational teaching than listening to live band. I do love music but very selective about it, and in the live band I can’t really choose what I’m listening to.

So I asked Lydia, the artist, and the answer didn’t really make sense to me at the beginning, the reason why she enjoyed the live band is the atmosphere, the music. She also mentioned that music, and that atmosphere was inspiration for her, for doing what she is very passionate about, arts and designs.

Being inspired by her, I thought to myself, why not a writer being inspired by the same atmosphere? so I’m observing the people around me and this is what I have got.

Listening to live band, the couple that was all around me is no longer chatting, they are just sitting together, watching towards the band, enjoying the existence of each other. It seems like dessert isn’t it, purely for the sweetness and enjoyment! Sometimes in our life we need to enjoy, no longer talk about dream or pursuit of success, but purely enjoying our loved ones and celebrating what we have today! That’s the dessert of life!

And that was the end of our dinner, really a great dinner with them, and I really enjoyed that!

The lesson I got that day, dreamers are not supposed to be alone and isolated, dreamers should mingle around with others, learn from others, share with others and involve others in their dream. That’s how you can have dinner with dreamers!

Cheers,
Robert
