Start declaring (though you can’t affirm)

November 1, 2007

Do you dream of becoming a better you? Can you start affirming that you have the character that you have dreamed about? It’s okay if you can’t, most of us can’t make affirmation toward ourselves because we know that we are trying to lie to ourselves, deep inside we know that we’re not there yet, and hence our affirmation is kind of in-sincere statements we make towards ourselves.

T. Harv Eker in his book, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind: Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth, encourages declaration instead of affirmation, what’s the difference?

The difference between a declaration and an affirmation is slight, but in my mind, powerful. The definition of an affirmation is “a positive statement asserting that a goal you wish to achieve is already happening.” The definition of a declaration is “to state an official intention to undertake a particular course of action or adopt a particular status.

And why does he encourage declaration instead of affirmation?

…often when we affirm something that is not yet real, the little voice in our head usually responds with “This isn’t true, this is BS.”

On the other hand, declaration is not saying something is true, it’s stating that we have an intention of doing or being something. This is a position the little voice can buy, because we’re not stating it’s true right now, but again, it’s an intention for us in the future.

What can we do to start declaring? write down or tell yourself a declaration. Blogging for me is also a good practice of declaring, blog about the character you want to develop, character you wish to have.

An example, check my post on generosity. Having been raised as a spoiled child, generosity is something I’m very lack of, sure you will see if you’re around me. But as I write the quote from John C. Maxwell about generosity, I’m inspired to pray as I write, “God, I’m not having this character yet, but I know I’m in the progress of having it. I’d like to have the attitude that I’m blessed, I have abundant life for me to share with others, I’m in the progress of having generosity.”

So, start declaring that you’re on the way there, even if you can’t affirm that you’re there. Inch by inch, you will achieve your goal.

God bless you!

PS: Thanks to my friend, Diin, who recommended me this book ^_^

Interesting post. Declaration instead of affirmation?
Sounds good.

Hi, thanks for stopping by and commenting,
it’s really a way of living, all my blog post is my declaration on the character I want to develop in me, even if it’s something I can’t affirm yet, I can start by having a declaration.

Robert
